A bill has been submitted to the State Duma allowing employees of transport security units to use stun guns (ESU), Interfax reports.
Transport security units work in crowded areas, therefore the use of firearms by their employees is prohibited. The authors of the initiative propose to consider the use of ESH as a weapon of active self-defense or a means to suppress acts of unlawful interference.
They draw attention to the fact that employees of a number of structures, including private security companies, private security, federal postal service and others already have the right to use the ESH.
Among the authors of the bill is the vice-chairman of the Duma Committee on Security and Anti-corruption, Anatoly Vyborny. He cited data on 467 acts of illegal interference at Russian transport infrastructure facilities in 2017.
As the deputy explained, "this figure includes the tragedy in the St. Petersburg metro."
Over the past year, employees of transport security units seized 247 firearms, 56.5 thousand ammunition and 32 kg of explosives.
